Get a little dusty on gravel in southern Johnson County Kansas, with a slight sojourn into Missouri. Start off in Stilwell KS at Stilwell station. It’s a Gas Station at the corner of 199th and Metcalf with extra parking, descent shop that has great riding snacks, and post ride pick me ups. There’s also a liquor store next door should you want post ride bevs. We started at 10:30 am so that we knew our planned stops would be open before we got there. It starts off paved, as you ride along 199th and Nall, but eventually turns to gravel on Nall, and the gravel is gorgeous! The stretch turning off of state line onto 233rd, through to and down Prospect is quiet, quaint, and a great easy ride. When you reach Cleveland, you have a couple of stop options. If you started late morning like we did, you can enjoy POG brewing. They have way more types of beer available than you may expect for a small brewery. If you’re riding early in the morning before the brewery opens, Bull Dog Brew House would make an excellent stop as well, and their profits help support multiple dog rescue charities. You’ll need to shake out your beer legs before you start climbing back west on 239th. Nothing too terribly steep, just several grinder style climbs. Check out the cool fence made of old wagon wheels as you turn onto 207th towards Bourgmont Winery. Unfortunately the Winery was closed for a funeral when we got there, but the property is gorgeous and we want try this route again to check them out more thoroughly. It’s a great route for getting some easy gravel miles in and checking out a few new stops. There was some fresh gravel poured on Pflumm Rd. and 207th that was a bit chunky to ride through, but I’m certain that state won’t last long and it’ll be as smooth and easy to ride as all the surrounding roads soon.
